Το Αμφιθέατρο στο πολιτιστικό κέντρο «το σκαλί» ετοιμάζεται και φέτος με μεγάλη χαρά να φιλοξενήσει το καθιερωμένο AglanJazz. 

Το AglanJazz 2021 θα παρουσιάσει έξι εξαιρετικά ενδιαφέρουσες μπάντες, οι οποίες θα κινηθούν σε ένα ευρύτερο μουσικό φάσμα, από την τζαζ, την έθνικ μέχρι και την μπλουζ-ροκ μουσική.

Η “Χαρά” είναι εδώ για να μας θυμίσει την ανεμελιά και την απλότητα με την οποία η μουσική μπορεί να μας μεταφέρει από το ένα συναίσθημα στο άλλο. Η μπάντα απαρτίζεται από μουσικούς με ποικίλες μουσικές επιρροές και εκπαιδεύσεις – παρόλο που σχεδόν όλοι έχουμε κοινό παρονομαστή τις σπουδές μας στην Ολλανδία στο τμήμα της τζαζ και την αγάπη μας για την πρόσμιξή της με μουσικές του κόσμου. Οι συνθέσεις της Ελεονώρας έχουν ως αφόρμηση προσωπικά βιώματα και εξερευνούν πρωτίστως την μορφολογία και τις ανατροπές των συναισθημάτων. Έχουν επιρροές από μια μεγάλη παλέτα μουσικών ειδών με κυρίαρχο το στοιχείο του αυτοσχεδιασμού.

As suggested by the name “Hará” (Joy), the compositions and songs to be presented are inspired by human emotions – their capacity, their structure, their effectiveness. My creative impetus is transparency, sharing and openness, so consequently these compositions are a moving amalgamation of life lived so far. Our band is conceptually comprised of musicians who belong to diverse music genres – classical, jazz, folk, Eastern Mediterranean, funk, Balkan and Latin music. Each musician brings his/her unique sound colours on the table thus making this a delightful palette of emotions. We appeared for the first time at the Jazz and World Music Showcase 2019 at Rialto Theatre in Limassol and we are now preparing our first album, “Hará”, which is a collection of compositions and songs.

21:30 Ioannis Vafeas Quartet “Catharsis”

Το κουαρτέτο του Ιωάννη Βαφέα ιδρύθηκε το 2018. Από τότε έχει εμφανιστεί σε διάφορες μουσικές σκηνές, φεστιβάλ και κλαμπ τόσο στην Κύπρο όσο και στο εξωτερικό. Τον Αύγουστο του 2020 ηχογράφησαν το νέο τους άλμπουμ με τίτλο CATHARSIS. Το άλμπουμ κυκλοφόρησε με το label της AVJ Productions και έχει αποσπάσει αξιόλογες κριτικές από το διεθνή τύπο. Περιλαμβάνει κυρίως συνθέσεις των Κύπριων συνθετών Μιχάλη Μέσσιου και Γλαύκου Κοντεμενιώτη, καθώς και μερικά κομμάτια από το κλασσικό ρεπερτόριο της τζαζ.

The Ioannis Vafeas Quartet was created in 2018. Since then, they appeared in festivals and major scenes in Cyprus and abroad. Last year the band recorded a new album entitled CATHARSIS which was released by AVJ Productions in December 2020 and got some fine reviews from the international press. Catharsis consists of, mainly, original compositions by the Cypriot composers Michael Messios and Glafkos Kontemeniotis along with a few jazz standards re-arranged to much the character and sound of the group.

22:30 Sokratis Votskos Quartet ”Sketching the Unknown”

Όταν, από τη σύλληψη της ιδέας για τη δημιουργία του σχήματος, μέχρι την κυκλοφορία του πρώτου τους δίσκου Sketching the Unknown (2019), από τη σπουδαία βρετανική δισκογραφική Jazzman Records, μεσολαβούν κάτι λιγότερο από δύο χρόνια, μάλλον έχουμε κάτι σπουδαίο μπροστά μας. Με αφορμή συνθετικό υλικό εμπνευσμένο από τον ήχο του Esbhorn Svensson Trio, του John Coltrane, του Wayne Shorter καθώς και των πρώιμων καταβολών της τζαζ, θα μας καλέσει να «σκιαγραφήσουμε το άγνωστο» μέσα από ένα μουσικό ταξίδι στη σύγχρονη τζαζ, με blues αναφορές, ελληνικούς και βαλκανικούς ήχους.

After only a few years of artistic presence and an international release (the album “Sketching the Unknown” by the UK-based Jazzman Records, 2019), this band is one of the new assets featuring prominently in the Greek music scene. Primary centered around straight-ahead contemporary jazz and heavily influenced by Balkan music, the band approaches, through Sokratis Votskos’s original compositions, modal jazz in a more comprehensive manner as it has been developed and popularized by Miles and Coltrane, and as we come across it throughout the genre-spectrum of Greek traditional music and/or Eastern musical tradition: a truly fresh and creative approach.

20:30 Mendonis Big Band

To ‘Mendonis Big Band’ είναι μία ορχήστρα Τζαζ που αποτελείται από 15 μουσικούς. Το πρότζεκτ δημιουργήθηκε από τον Πέτρο Μεντώνη ο οποίος συνθέτει, ενορχηστρώνει και διευθύνει την ορχήστρα. Οι συνθέσεις που θα παρουσιαστούν από την ορχήστρα είναι πρωτότυπες και συνδυάζουν τον ήχο της Τζαζ με άλλα μοντέρνα ηχοχρώματα, σε ένα μοναδικό συνδυασμό.

Έχοντας στη διάθεση του σαξόφωνα, χάλκινα πνευστά καθώς επίσης και τύμπανα, πιάνο, κοντραμπάσο και κιθάρα, προσφέρουν ένα ήχο που δεν συνηθίζεται στα μουσικά δρώμενα της Κύπρου. Οι συνθέσεις ρου Μεντώνη αποτελούνται από διάφορους ρυθμούς και πλούσιες μουσικές αρμονίες.

The ‘Mendonis Big Band’ is a large jazz ensemble consisting of 15 musicians. The project was founded by Petros Mendonis who is also responsible for the arrangements and the conducting of the musical compositions. The idea behind the project is to have original compositions and to promote authenticity with new sounds.

The music that will be presented at the Aglanjazz festival is a combination of various rhythms used in jazz as well as rich harmonic content with storytelling melodies.

The ‘Mendonis Big Band’ consists of various saxophones, brass instruments as well as a firm rhythm section (drums, piano, double bass and guitar), accompanied by unique orchestrations, producing musical experiences, the likes of which are not regularly heard in Cyprus.

21:30 Kodály Spicy Jazz

Μια από τις πιο διάσημες fusion μπάντες της Ουγγαρίας που αναμειγνύουν περίτεχνα τις παραδοσιακές μουσικές του Ζόλταν Κόνταλυ, του γνωστού εθνομουσικολόγου, μουσικοπαιδαγωγού και συνθέτη της χώρας, με πιο μοντέρνους ήχους, όπως αυτών της φανκ και της τζαζ. Το Kodály Spicy Jazz δημιουργήθηκε το 2017 στη μνήμη της 50ης επετείου του θανάτου του Zoltán Kodály. Αποτελείται από μουσικούς που έχουν παίξει και συνεχίζουν να παίζουν σε διάφορα ουγγρικά συγκροτήματα, συγκροτώντας έτσι ό,τι καλύτερο έχει να επιδείξει η σύγχρονη ουγγρική μουσική σκηνή. Το πρώτο τους LP κυκλοφόρησε το 2018 και είναι βασισμένο σε διασκευές γνωστών παραδοσιακών τραγουδιών, τα οποία έχουν αναδειχθεί από τον Κόνταλυ.

Kodály Spicy Jazz was formed in 2017 in memoriam of the 50th anniversary of Zoltán Kodály’s death. It aims to bring the well-known Hungarian folk songs from choir and singing lessons to the – mainly young – audience in a new, creative, energetic fresh kind of flavour. The members of the band are professional musicians who have several bands and represent a wide spectrum of genres like blues, funk, rock, metal, reggae or pop music. Their first LP was published in 2018 and it contained ten re-brainstormed folksongs that are known owing to Kodály’s collective work.

22:30 Workin’ Trio

Το Workin’ Trio δημιουργήθηκε το 2020. Η μουσική τους προέρχεται από εκρηκτικούς σουίνγκ ρυθμούς αναμιγμένους με στοιχεία παρμένα από Γκόσπελ, Νιού Ορλίνς και Μπουγκαλού. Ο συνδυασμός των σαξοφώνου, οργάνου και τυμπάνων δίνει ένα μοναδικό ήχο στη μπάντα. Στόχος του Τρίο είναι να ξεθάψει τα λιγότερο γνωστά κομμάτια των 40s, 50s and 60s όπως και να συνθέσει μουσική στα ίδια πλαίσια. Με την επέκταση της μπάντας σε κουαρτέτο και την προσθήκη του δεύτερου τενόρου, η μπάντα θα εκτελέσει συνθέσεις που έγιναν γνωστές από την τζαζ παράδοση της «μάχης» δύο τενόρων.

Workin’ Trio is a band formed in 2020. Their music is inspired by uplifting swing grooves at times blended with Gospel, New Orleans, and Boogaloo rhythms. The combination of the Hammond organ, tenor saxophone, and drums creates a unique sound. The focus of the Trio is to unbury the less-known repertoire from the 40s, 50s and 60s as well as to compose original tunes along the same lines. Now with the addition of the second tenor, the band will also perform tunes made famous by the tradition of the tenor sax battles.
